Death Sentence for a Christian Man in Pakistan on Charges of 'Insulting Muslims'

A court in Pakistan has sentenced a Christian man to death for sharing content on social media that the court deemed 'insulting to Muslims.' Khuram Shehzad, the defense lawyer for the accused, Ehsan Shan, announced this news on Monday, July 2, stating that he will appeal the ruling. He told the Associated Press that his client was not involved in tearing the Quran but was accused of reposting images of its pages on his TikTok account. Amir Farooq, the police officer who arrested Mr. Shan, stated that the man shared 'hate content during a sensitive time when authorities were trying to curb violence.' Nawid Kashif, a local pastor from a church in Sahiwal, Punjab, expressed that he does not endorse Ehsan Shan's actions but is surprised by the heavy sentence, questioning why the court issued such a severe ruling while individuals involved in related attacks have not yet been punished. Earlier in June 2023, hundreds of Muslims attacked a Christian minority settlement in eastern Pakistan, burning at least one house and a small shoe factory, injuring several Christians who were sent to the hospital. The worst of these mob attacks occurred in August 2022 when a group of Pakistani Muslims stormed a Christian neighborhood in eastern Pakistan, destroying several churches and setting dozens of homes on fire under the pretext of 'insulting the Quran.' This attack followed claims by some residents that they had seen two Christian men tearing pages from the Quran, throwing them on the ground, and writing insults on other pages. The two men were later arrested. At that time, no casualties were reported as terrified Christians fled their homes to safer areas. The police later announced that over 100 suspects were arrested following the incident, although it is unclear if any of them have been convicted. Insulting religious sentiments or 'blasphemy' is a sensitive issue in Pakistan, where the majority of the population is Muslim, and a mere accusation can lead to death at the hands of an angry mob. Although the death penalty is prescribed for blasphemy in Pakistan, no one has been executed for this charge so far. Nevertheless, there have been numerous instances of individuals being killed extrajudicially by angry Muslims. Earlier last month, Nazir Masih, a 72-year-old man who had been injured a month prior by an attack from an angry mob of Muslims under the pretext of blasphemy, passed away.
