Death toll from suicide attack at Alexandria stadium rises to over 40

The Associated Press reported on Saturday that the death toll from the suicide attack on Friday at a stadium in Alexandria, Iraq, has risen to over 40, with many of the victims being teenagers. Although the latest official figures indicate that 32 people were killed and 84 others were injured in this suicide attack, the Associated Press, citing medical and security officials in Iraq, reported that the number of dead is 41 and the number of injured is 105. However, the Associated Press noted that its cited security and medical sources requested to remain anonymous because they are not officially authorized to disclose information about the casualties of this attack. This suicide attack occurred on Friday, the 6th of Farvardin, during a football match at a small stadium in the city of Alexandria, located 50 kilometers south of Baghdad, and the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack. In response to this suicide bombing, Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who was on an official visit to Baghdad, expressed condolences to the victims' families and emphasized the global community's sympathy for Iraqi citizens 'in an atmosphere of terror and injustice.' This suicide attack also drew a reaction from Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, who stated that while football is a unifying force worldwide, it is very tragic that people gathered for a match become 'victims of such violence.' Iraqi citizens buried the victims of this incident on Saturday, and reports from the French news agency indicate that at least 17 teenagers aged between 10 and 16 are listed among the dead. The report also indicates that the suicide bomber, whose image was released by the Islamic State group, appears to be a teenager.
