Deaths of Al-Qaeda Members in Syria Following US Attacks

The US Department of Defense reports that a group of Al-Qaeda members were killed in recent attacks in Syria. Matthew Allen, a Pentagon spokesperson, confirmed to reporters on April 6 that 'I can confirm that several Al-Qaeda militants were killed in an attack on a vehicle.' Allen emphasized that the investigation into the recent attack and its consequences is still ongoing. According to AFP, an unnamed US Department of Defense official stated that the attack took place in 'northwestern Syria.' The Washington Post reported that the recent attack on Al-Qaeda members occurred late on Tuesday. Reports indicate that Abu Firas al-Suri, the spokesperson for the 'Jabhat al-Nusra' group, Al-Qaeda's branch in Syria, was killed during airstrikes in the Idlib outskirts last week. At that time, the Pentagon stated that US airstrikes targeted a meeting of this group. Compared to the ongoing attacks on the 'Islamic State' (ISIS), fewer reports have emerged regarding attacks on 'Jabhat al-Nusra' and Al-Qaeda members in Syria. Both 'Jabhat al-Nusra' and 'Islamic State' are recognized as terrorist groups by the United Nations and are not included in the Syrian ceasefire. Negotiations between representatives of the central government and Syrian opposition are set to continue on April 11 to end the five-year crisis in the country. Opponents of Bashar al-Assad claim that his continued presence in power will not lead to a successful peace dialogue. The United Nations has announced that upcoming negotiations will focus on establishing a political transition in the country.
