Democratic National Convention; Barack Obama Returns to Support Kamala Harris

Former U.S. President Barack Obama returned to the national stage to support his longtime ally Kamala Harris in the presidential election against Republican nominee Donald Trump. On the evening of August 30, Obama and Michelle Obama warned of the difficult fight ahead and urged American voters to support Harris. Obama, the first Black president in U.S. history, emphasized that America is ready to elect Harris, who has Jamaican and Indian heritage and would be the first female president if victorious. Speaking at a rally in his hometown of Chicago, he said, 'America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris.' Obama stated, 'Kamala Harris is ready for this job. She is someone who has dedicated her life to fighting for those who need a voice and a champion.' The Democratic National Convention began amid protests, with Biden calling for the preservation of democracy. Obama also referred to Trump as 'a 78-year-old billionaire' who has been complaining about his problems since he descended from his golden escalator nine years ago. He asserted, 'This has been a constant stream of grievances and discontent that has only gotten worse because he fears losing to Kamala.' The former president added, 'We do not need four more years of chaos and turmoil. We have seen that movie, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse.' This remark referenced the January 6, 2021 attack by some of Trump's supporters on the U.S. Capitol. Former First Lady Michelle Obama also stated, 'America, hope is returning.' She remarked about Trump, 'His narrow and closed-minded view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, educated, and successful individuals who just happen to be Black.' On the same evening, several Republicans who have left the party since Trump's leadership spoke at the Democratic National Convention, including Stephanie Grisham, Trump's former White House spokesperson, and John Giles, the Republican mayor of Mesa, Arizona. Grisham recounted how she once believed in Trump and was a senior official in the White House but resigned after the January 6 attack. She stated, 'Trump has no sense of empathy, ethics, or loyalty to the truth. Kamala Harris speaks the truth. She respects the American people. And she has my vote.' One of the Democrats' hopes in the November 5 election is to attract conservative voters who do not like Trump. The main challenge for Democrats is to convince them to go to the polls and vote for Kamala Harris. At this convention, Kamala Harris is set to formally accept the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidency. Democratic Party members recently agreed to Harris's candidacy in an online vote. Last month, Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential election and endorsed Kamala Harris, after which Democratic Party members launched a broad campaign in support of her candidacy.
