Democratic Party's Response to Trump's Speech at Joint Session of Congress

Following Donald Trump's annual speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, March 5, Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan delivered a televised response to the Republican president's address. Senator Slotkin criticized Trump's policies in areas such as the economy, immigration, and foreign policy, accusing him of acting to the detriment of the American middle class and in favor of the wealthy close to him. She stated that Americans hold three fundamental beliefs: the middle class is the engine of America; strong national security protects America from harm; and American democracy, though sometimes chaotic, is unique and worth fighting to protect. She emphasized that change is necessary, but the changes made by the Trump administration and Elon Musk have caused chaos, citing instances where government employees who were initially laid off in critical areas such as nuclear, flight security, and cancer research were called back to work 'two days later.' She asserted that any manager who does this would be fired. Senator Slotkin further stressed that America desires change, but there is a responsible way to create change and a reckless way. She added that the prices of essential items such as food, housing, and healthcare must be reduced. She argued that America should produce more goods domestically, with good union jobs, and that the government should bring its supply chains back from countries like China to the U.S. She stated that we need to assure American businesses to invest and create future jobs, and we need a tax system that is fair for those who are not billionaires. Elissa Slotkin remarked that the President has made 'big claims' about the economy, but it is always important to examine the details. According to her, Trump's plans will not help Americans progress. This Democratic senator stated, 'Food and housing prices are rising, not falling. He has not provided any credible plan to address these issues. His tariffs on allies like Canada will increase energy, lumber, and vehicle prices and will start a trade war that will harm producers and farmers. Your healthcare premiums and medications will become more expensive because his plans do not work without reducing your healthcare services. Meanwhile, for those who are paying attention, the national debt is increasing, not decreasing. If he is not careful, it could lead us into an economic recession.' She mentioned that Trump might encroach on American retirees' benefits, including health insurance for the elderly and low-income individuals and Social Security, to finance his plans. Slotkin stated, 'Trump claims he is not doing this, but Elon Musk recently called Social Security 'the biggest Ponzi scheme in history.' In terms of immigration, this Democratic senator stated that America is a country of immigrants and needs an efficient immigration system that meets America's economic needs and allows approved individuals to work legally in the U.S., thus awaiting the President's program in this area. She added that today's world is deeply interconnected, and issues such as immigration, cyber threats, artificial intelligence, environmental destruction, and terrorism cannot be resolved by any country alone, and America needs friends in all corners of the world, with U.S. security dependent on them. Slotkin said, 'Trump likes to say 'peace through strength,' a phrase that Slotkin claims he has actually stolen from Ronald Reagan. But let me say, after last week's display in the Oval Office, Reagan would be shaking with anger in his grave if he were alive.' This senator referred to the confrontation between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, in the White House. This Democratic senator stated, 'We all want an end to the war in Ukraine. But Reagan knew that true power requires a combination of America's military and economic capabilities with moral clarity. But the scene we witnessed in the Oval Office... was a summary of Trump's approach to the world.' Elissa Slotkin added, 'America is not perfect, but I stand with the majority of Americans who believe our country is still exceptional and unparalleled. And I would prefer to be under American leadership any day of the week rather than the leadership of China or Russia.
