Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren Enters the 2020 U.S. Presidential Race

Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic senator from Massachusetts, announced her intention to enter the 2020 presidential race on Monday, January 1, by forming an exploratory committee. Known as a 'liberal firebrand' within the Democratic Party, Warren released a video outlining her views on creating opportunity, not just wealth, for all Americans. The 69-year-old senator stated in her video: 'Our differences don't matter. We all want the same thing. To work hard, follow the same rules, and take care of ourselves and those we love. This is what I am fighting for, and that is why I have launched an exploratory committee for the presidential election. I need your help.' In September, Warren indicated that she was seriously considering a candidacy for the Democratic nomination to compete against Republican Donald Trump in the 2020 election. During the 2016 campaign, Warren frequently clashed with Trump, who nicknamed her 'Pocahontas' due to her Native American ancestry. As the architect of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau following the 2008 crisis, Warren is a powerful voice in the U.S. Senate on financial issues. The former Harvard Law School professor campaigned alongside Hillary Clinton's team in 2016 to secure the Democratic nominee's victory, calling Trump a 'wobbly, money-grubbing worm' filled with greed and hate. She informed her supporters in an email that she would officially launch her campaign in early 2019. Elizabeth Warren is currently the most prominent Democratic figure to announce her candidacy for the U.S. presidential election. Earlier in mid-December, Julian Castro, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Barack Obama, also announced the formation of an exploratory committee for the 2020 race. The formation of this committee allows candidates to legally raise funds for their campaigns. However, John Delaney is the only Democratic figure who has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency. It seems that with the start of the new calendar year and the entry of serious candidates into the election scene, this trend may change.
