Denmark Allocates $250 Million Military Package to Ukraine

On Thursday, March 3, Denmark announced a new military aid package worth nearly $250 million to Ukraine and called for increased support from its allies to Kyiv. With this action, Denmark's total financial assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion two years ago reaches approximately $5 billion. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters, "It must be emphasized that Ukraine needs more assistance to win the battle against Russia." The Danish Prime Minister also stated that her country has joined other allies, including the UK and Germany, in signing a ten-year security agreement with Ukraine. She mentioned that Denmark, along with the Netherlands and the United States, is leading a coalition to strengthen Ukraine's air force and will deliver its first F-16 fighter jets to Kyiv in the summer. The spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force stated on Thursday that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Russia has attacked Ukraine with over 8,000 missiles and more than 4,600 drones. He noted that the Ukrainian Air Force has managed to destroy most of the launched drones, including Iranian-made Shahed drones, and on Thursday alone, Ukraine's air defense shot down eight out of ten Russian attacking drones. The Ukrainian military claims that Russia has focused its winter attacks on agricultural facilities, ports, weapon production facilities, and the energy sector. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that it had captured the village of Pobeda in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, but the Ukrainian army stated prior to Moscow's announcement that Ukrainian forces were repelling attacks near this village and preventing Russian soldiers' advance. In another report, Moscow's allies welcomed President Vladimir Putin's decision to withdraw from the 1956 fishing agreement between the UK and the former Soviet Union. A member of the Russian Duma stated that Putin's decision shows how Moscow can counter Western sanctions. However, the UK stated that it has not received any official statement from Moscow regarding this matter and that this decision has no impact since British boats do not fish in Russian waters. The European Union approved a new sanctions package against Russia. The United States once again criticized the Islamic Republic for supporting Russia in the Ukraine war. Zelensky stated that delays in sending foreign aid have made the situation on the front lines "very difficult." Reuters reported that US sanctions against Moscow have disrupted trade between Turkey and Russia. Ukraine has retreated from the city of Avdiivka; Zelensky urged allies to address the shortage of weapons. A US military official stated that there is sufficient budget to continue training Ukrainian pilots on F-16s. Denmark is joining the US-led coalition in the Red Sea.
