Denmark Increases Defense Budget for Greenland in Response to Trump's Remarks

The Danish Ministry of Defense announced that it will allocate a substantial budget for the protection and defense of Greenland, a vast island in the Arctic regions with rich natural resources. This island, located in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean and not far from North America, has been owned by Denmark for centuries and is governed as an autonomous region of the country. Nevertheless, Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, has recently brought up the controversial topic of the U.S. purchasing this island again. On Monday, December 24, he wrote on his social media platform, 'Social Truth': 'From a national security and freedom perspective worldwide, the United States believes that ownership of Greenland is a vital necessity.' Mette Frederiksen, the Prime Minister of Greenland, responded to Trump's message in a statement saying, 'We are not for sale and will never be for sale. Greenland belongs to us. We should not waste years of struggle for freedom.' The Danish government also announced its support for the Prime Minister of Greenland's position without providing further details. Troels Lund Poulsen, the Danish Minister of Defense, stated on Tuesday, December 25, referring to Trump's remarks, that the budget allocated for the protection of Greenland is 'multi-billion dollars.' Poulsen added in an interview with a Danish newspaper that this budget will be used to purchase two patrol boats, two long-range drones, and to organize and equip two military units equipped with sleds. 'We have not invested in Greenland for years and intend to strengthen our defensive presence in this territory.' He mentioned that Denmark alone cannot oversee the vast territory of Greenland and added, 'Currently, there is no specific plan, but we will cooperate with the U.S.' Trump had also raised the issue of purchasing Greenland during his first term in office, which led to a diplomatic rift between the two countries, with the Danish government at that time describing the proposal as 'ridiculous.' In recent years, competition among the U.S., China, and Russia for influence in the Arctic and the exploitation of rich natural resources in this part of the world has intensified. In his controversial remarks on Monday, Trump did not limit himself to the purchase of Greenland. He also suggested that the U.S. should reclaim the Panama Canal and mentioned that Canada could be added as another state to the U.S. The Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was completed by American companies in 1914 and was under U.S. control until the end of 1999 when it was returned to Panama. According to Trump himself, the reason for bringing up the issue of U.S. ownership of the Panama Canal is the high shipping costs through this waterway. The President of Panama immediately reacted to this issue and rejected Trump's remarks. Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, also called Trump's comments about his country a 'joke' but emphasized that despite Trump's threats to impose sanctions against Canada, trade negotiations with the new U.S. government will continue.
