Denmark to Return Its Ambassador to Tehran

Denmark announced on Tuesday, November 20, that it will return its ambassador to Tehran. Denmark had recalled its ambassador following what it described as foiling an Iranian security service plot to assassinate three opponents of the Islamic Republic. According to the Associated Press, Anders Samuelsen, Denmark's Foreign Minister, stated that Danish Ambassador Danny Ian is returning to Tehran as part of intensified diplomatic efforts and close cooperation with European partners. The Foreign Minister also mentioned that the European Union held new consultations on joint actions regarding Iran on Tuesday. However, Samuelsen did not provide further details on these joint actions. Anna Muller, a spokesperson for the Danish Foreign Ministry, also told AFP earlier that the ambassador would return to Iran on Thursday. The Danish Security and Intelligence Service had reported on November 29 that a Norwegian citizen of Iranian descent was arrested in the country on suspicion of collaborating with Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and attempting to attack members of an opposition group. Danish police stated that this individual was seen taking photos of members of the 'Ahvaz Movement' in Ringsted, located 60 kilometers southwest of Copenhagen. Finn Borch Andersen, head of the Danish Intelligence Service, also mentioned that at the same time, a suspicious black Volvo with Swedish plates near the home of Habib Jabr, leader of the 'Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz' in Denmark, failed to stop at a police checkpoint and attempted to flee. Meanwhile, Iran has denied any involvement in this assassination plot, calling it a conspiracy by Israeli security. Additionally, Denmark announced on November 7 that it had arrested three members of the separatist group 'Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz' for praising an armed attack on a military parade in Ahvaz, Iran. These three individuals were released the following day. The 'Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz' was formed in 1999 and is considered a terrorist group by the Islamic Republic.
