Destruction of 500-Meter Islamic Jihad Tunnel; Israel Reports Killing Dozens of Palestinian Militants

As Israel's military operations against Palestinian militants in Gaza continue, the Israeli army announced on Saturday, August 25, the destruction of a 500-meter tunnel belonging to Islamic Jihad, one of the groups supported by the Islamic Republic. This tunnel was located on the outskirts of "Deir al-Balah" in central Gaza and was destroyed by Israeli army engineers. The Israeli army stated that during ongoing clashes in eastern Deir al-Balah, dozens of Palestinian militants were killed and many of their hideouts were destroyed. The Hebrew-language account of the Israeli army on the social media platform "X" also reported, along with two photos, that in the past 24 hours, Israeli forces "killed dozens of terrorists in southern and central Gaza; one terrorist from Hamas's weapon production unit was eliminated." Concurrently with the ongoing clashes, the Israeli army issued an evacuation order for civilians from eastern Deir al-Balah and "Mugazi" in central Gaza. The Arabic-speaking spokesperson for the Israeli army published a map of the areas from which residents should evacuate. Civilians in this area are to move to a humanitarian zone designated by the Israeli army, which currently constitutes 11% of the total area of Gaza and houses 1.9 million of Gaza's residents. Reports indicate that Egypt rejected Israel's request to establish eight watchtowers along the Philadelphi Corridor during negotiations this week in Cairo. An Egyptian media outlet reported that the country also rejected the U.S. request to construct two such watchtowers. The Philadelphi Corridor, 14 kilometers long, serves as a barrier between Egypt and the Gaza Strip and Israel. Israel insists that its military forces remain in this area to prevent Hamas from regrouping. In contrast, Egypt and Hamas are calling for the complete withdrawal of Israeli military forces from the area. U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General CQ Brown traveled to the Middle East on an unannounced visit on Saturday. General Brown stated that the purpose of this trip is to reduce tensions and prevent the outbreak of regional war. Jordan is the first stop for General Brown, after which he will visit Egypt and Israel. Al Jazeera reported that a Hamas delegation is heading to Cairo for ceasefire talks; however, a Hamas official told AFP that this delegation will not participate in the negotiations. Ceasefire negotiations in Gaza continue in Cairo; the White House stated that progress has been made. The U.S. and Israeli defense ministers discussed the "ongoing threats" posed by the Iranian government and Hezbollah. Clashes in Gaza continue; the Israeli negotiating team went to Egypt to discuss hostages. Netanyahu expressed dissatisfaction with the negotiating team and emphasized the priority of ensuring Israeli security. A U.S. representative to the United Nations stated that a ceasefire agreement in Gaza is "within reach."
