Detailed Report by the U.S. State Department: The Islamic Republic is the World's Largest Sponsor of Terrorism, Just as for the Past Forty Years

The U.S. State Department, in its latest report on global terrorism for the year 2022, highlighted the destructive activities of the Islamic Republic in the Middle East and around the world, stating that the Islamic Republic continues to be the largest supporter of terrorism and facilitator of terrorist activities globally, just as it has been for the past forty years. The report, published on Thursday, December 9, 1402 (Persian calendar), noted the extensive threats posed by the Islamic Republic against the United States and former U.S. officials in retaliation for the killing of Qassem Soleimani. It mentioned that in August, a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was arrested for attempting to arrange the murder of a former U.S. National Security Advisor. The report emphasized that in 2022, the Islamic Republic regionally supported terrorist actions in Bahrain, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen through proxies and groups like Hezbollah. Globally, the IRGC and the Ministry of Intelligence were identified as the main actors of the Tehran regime in supporting the recruitment, financing, and plotting of terrorist activities across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America. Hezbollah was labeled a terrorist group in the report, which also noted the long history of this group’s activities in the Western Hemisphere, identifying supporters and members in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Panama, Peru, and the United States. According to the U.S. State Department, since being designated as a state sponsor of terrorism in 1984, the Islamic Republic has continued to support terrorist activities and organizations worldwide, remaining one of the key factors in regional instability. The report acknowledged that Iranian regime officials have repeatedly admitted to the IRGC's involvement in conflicts in Iraq and Syria, and that the IRGC has implemented its main mechanism for nurturing terrorists and supporting terrorist activities. Funding and arming terrorist groups such as Kata'ib Hezbollah, Harakat al-Nujaba, and Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq in Iraq, significant support for the Assad regime in Syria, financial inducements or sheltering of Shia fighters from Afghanistan and Pakistan, allocating hundreds of millions of dollars to the destructive activities of Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and Hamas in Palestinian territories, providing weapons, support, and training to Shia militia groups, including the al-Shatr and Saraya al-Mukhtar in Bahrain, arming, training, and providing advanced equipment such as drones to Houthi militants in Yemen, and terrorist attacks against Israeli targets, as well as allowing senior al-Qaeda members to reside in Iran, were among the actions of the Islamic Republic in support of terrorist groups and activities in the region in 2022. The report also indicated that in 2022, the Islamic Republic and Iranian regime officials carried out numerous destructive actions globally and in European countries, including supporting terrorist plots or activities aimed at targeting opponents and other enemies of the regime in the UK, Albania, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark, as well as a plot to assassinate John Bolton, a former U.S. National Security Advisor.
