Detention of Nahid Behroozi, a Baha'i citizen, extended despite her deteriorating health

Radio Farda has learned that the detention of Nahid Behroozi, a Baha'i citizen, has been extended for another ten days despite her deteriorating health. Informed sources told Radio Farda on Tuesday, August 6, that Ms. Behroozi has been suffering from asthma, arthritis, and high cholesterol for a long time, and her health condition has become concerning after a week of detention. Despite the investigator's permission for her to access necessary medications, 'security agencies have avoided allowing her access to her medications, which has further worsened Nahid Behroozi's condition.' According to these sources, Ms. Behroozi has also been deprived of basic hygiene facilities such as 'new clothes and washing supplies like shampoo' during this time. Nahid Behroozi was arrested on August 1 in the Violette neighborhood of Karaj and has been accused of 'promoting beliefs,' a charge that was not included in the initial arrest warrant but was recorded by security agents at the time of her arrest. Pressure on Baha'i followers has continued over the past month; security forces arrested another Baha'i citizen in the city of Maku in West Azerbaijan Province, and a court hearing for two other Baha'i citizens was held in Babol. Previous reports by Radio Farda have highlighted new restrictions on Baha'is, including limitations on burials in Baha'i cemeteries in Tehran, the sealing of their shops, and dismissals from jobs, noting that a new wave of repression against Baha'i citizens in Iran has begun with the onset of the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests. The Islamic Republic does not recognize the Baha'i faith, and judicial officials have repeatedly labeled Baha'is as 'spies and enemies,' issuing death sentences, arrests, imprisonment, and restrictions on education and employment against them.
