Deterioration of Atena Daemi's Health Due to Hunger Strike

Atena Daemi's mother, a human rights activist currently imprisoned in Evin, states that her daughter's condition has worsened due to the ongoing hunger strike, and she is facing numerous physical problems. Atena Daemi is currently on her seventeenth day of hunger strike in the women's ward of Evin Prison, and her mother, who visited her yesterday, emphasized that 'Atena's life is the responsibility of the Revolutionary Guards, the judiciary, and the prosecutor's office.' Masoumeh Nemat, regarding her visit with Atena Daemi, told the Harana news agency: 'Today [Sunday], we visited Atena. She was not well at all. She has lost about 10 kilograms and is suffering from kidney pain, nausea, and dizziness. The medical doctor said there is a possibility of infection entering her blood. Her tongue was yellow, and her nails were blue.' Atena Daemi has stated that the reason for her hunger strike is to protest the sentencing of her two sisters, Ansieh and Hanieh Daemi, claiming that the Islamic Republic takes the families of political prisoners hostage. The Tehran Criminal Court sentenced Ansieh and Hanieh Daemi to three months and one day in prison for 'insulting officials' during Atena Daemi's arrest, which will remain suspended for one year. Atena Daemi is seeking the annulment of this sentence. Meanwhile, her mother has told Harana that Atena intends to stage a sit-in in front of the officer's office in the ward starting Tuesday, and if she does not receive a response, she will begin a dry hunger strike. Atena Daemi has been sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of 'gathering and colluding and propaganda against the country,' 'insulting sacred values and leadership,' and 'concealing evidence of a crime.' However, human rights groups, including Amnesty International, emphasize that her conviction is due to 'writing posts on Facebook criticizing executions, painting murals against executions on walls, attending the graves of victims of the 2009 elections, and informing about political prisoners.' In this context, Amnesty International has called for the release of Atena Daemi amid the continued detention of journalists, student activists, civil activists, and Baha'i citizens.
