Director of IAEA Inspectors Resigns

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Friday, May 11, that the director of inspectors of this United Nations-affiliated body has resigned, but the agency did not provide any explanation for the reasons behind this resignation. Reuters reported that the resignation of Tero Varjoranta comes at a sensitive time, just three days after the United States announced its withdrawal from the nuclear agreement with Iran, raising many questions about the future of this agreement and Iran's future cooperation with the IAEA. Mr. Varjoranta, who is Finnish, has been the Deputy Director General of the IAEA and the head of the agency's safeguards department since October 2013, overseeing countries' compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The IAEA stated that his temporary replacement will be the head of the agency's Iran inspection team. A spokesperson for the IAEA stated: 'Mr. Tero Varjoranta resigned on May 11 (corresponding to May 21). The Director General [of the IAEA] has appointed Mr. Massimo Aparo, the interim head of the Iran monitoring section, as the acting Deputy Director General and head of the safeguards department.' The nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, along with the European Union, limits the Islamic Republic's nuclear activities to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons. The IAEA, which oversees the implementation of this agreement, emphasized one day after the U.S. President's announcement of withdrawal from the JCPOA that Iran remains committed to its obligations. The IAEA has also consistently defended the JCPOA, calling it a significant achievement in preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The spokesperson for this international body stated that 'the agency's monitoring activities will continue to be conducted at the highest professional level.' However, he did not provide any explanation regarding Tero Varjoranta's resignation, only stating that the agency cannot comment on personal matters and that such matters are confidential. Tero Varjoranta has over thirty years of experience in the nuclear energy field. Before his work at the IAEA, he was the director of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority. Mr. Varjoranta has visited Iran several times in recent years, including a visit to the Parchin area on September 20, 2015, alongside Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the IAEA.
