Diverse Reactions from American Politicians to Nuclear Agreement with Iran

While Hillary Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate, considered it a step towards curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions, John Boehner, Republican Speaker of the House, labeled the agreement as 'a bad deal.' On Tuesday, following the announcement of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1, Hillary Clinton referred to the deal as 'a significant moment' and stated, 'Based on what I know, the agreement is a step towards curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions.' According to Reuters, after meeting with Democratic members of the House of Representatives, she said, 'I think this is an important step that limits Iran's nuclear program.' She also mentioned that the agreement would allow the U.S. to focus on preventing other actions by Iran. On the other hand, John Boehner described the agreement with Iran as a 'bad deal' that would provide billions of dollars to Iran through eased sanctions and ultimately allow the country to acquire nuclear weapons. However, he stated in a conversation with reporters that he did not want to prejudge but expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the agreement. He said, 'We will do everything we can to stop it.' In another reaction, Marco Rubio, Republican Senator from Florida and presidential candidate, condemned the nuclear deal with Iran on Tuesday, stating that if elected, he would reinstate the sanctions. According to Reuters, Rubio, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee controlled by Republicans, called for the rejection of the nuclear deal with Iran. He said, 'Based on what we know so far, the agreement will undermine our national security.' Senator Rubio is a Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election. Currently, the House Foreign Relations Committee has begun reviewing and discussing the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1.
