Dog Abuser Arrested Behind Bars in Golestan

The assailant of a hunting dog in Golestan province was arrested by the Environmental Protection Unit after a video of the dog's abuse went viral. On Friday, animal rights groups published images of severe abuse inflicted on a dog in the village of Gonila, located in the Kalaleh county of Golestan province. The images show a man, apparently a hunter, beating a dog that is howling in pain. Bahram Mohammad Ovezadeh, the owner and assailant of the dog, confirmed the images to Radio Farda, stating that he beat the dog because it had eaten his food. On Sunday, a group of animal rights supporters gathered in front of the Environmental Protection Agency in Golestan, demanding legal action against the assailant and attention to the dog's physical condition. Additionally, calls for protests in other cities across Iran regarding this issue have been circulated on social media. Maryam Sanaei, head of the animal shelter for stray animals in Mazandaran, told Radio Farda that after the video was released online, she visited the office of Masoumeh Ebtekar, head of the Environmental Protection Organization, and with the cooperation of the Golestan Environmental Organization, the assailant was arrested. Ms. Sanaei stated that she saw a photo of the arrested assailant but could not confirm whether the dog taken from him was the same one in the video. One day after the release of the abuse clip, Farhad Dabiri, deputy of natural environment and biodiversity at the Environmental Protection Organization, emphasized the organization's serious opposition to animal abuse and announced the submission of a draft bill for the protection of stray and homeless animals to the government. The assailant of this hunting dog is currently facing charges from the Golestan Environmental Agency and the Iranian Animal Rights Association in the Kalaleh judiciary. Reza Javalechi, spokesperson for the Iranian Animal Rights Association, provided details about the assailant's arrest, stating that the individuals in the video appear to be hunters, as they are armed and possess hunting rifles. The dog belongs to this person, and it is presumed that the dog failed to catch prey or made a small mistake, leading to the assailant's violent reaction. Fortunately, the vehicle's license plate was visible, and through follow-up, the assailant's name and details were identified; he is known to be a hunter in the area and has illegally hunted animals. He resides in the Gonila village of Kalaleh county. A phone call was made to the assailant's family, who claimed that the dog was fine and had no issues. However, based on the video evidence, it is believed that the dog could not have survived such severe beating. Reza Javalechi expressed hope that, given the weaknesses in the laws, this case would be treated as a crime and the assailant would be prosecuted. He noted that the association has sent a letter along with the video and screenshots of the vehicle's license plate to Hadi Hashemian, head of the Golestan judiciary, requesting that the case be addressed. It appears that some follow-up has occurred, and the case is now with the Golestan prosecutor's office. There was even an attempt to visit the assailant, but he was reportedly absent or may have fled. In such cases, when someone behaves violently towards animals, what punishment is considered for that individual? Given the weaknesses in the laws, there is hope that this issue will be treated as a crime and the individual will be prosecuted. Unfortunately, there are not very strong laws for animal protection, and those in the judicial system may not value animals highly. However, it is clear that someone who treats an animal so ruthlessly can also behave the same way towards humans, and such individuals are considered dangerous to society and need psychological evaluation. There must be a punishment that serves as a lesson for others.
