Comey was involved in investigations regarding Russian interference in the recent U.S. presidential election and potential collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia, and his dismissal led the Justice Department to appoint Robert Mueller as a special counsel to conclude the investigation into this matter. Trump has denied any collusion between his campaign and the Kremlin and insists that he fired Comey due to his 'incompetence' in handling the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails. Clinton was Trump's electoral rival in the presidential election, and an investigation into her alleged use of a work email for personal matters is still ongoing. In his tweets on Friday, Trump referred to Comey as a 'leaker' and accused him of lying to Congress, referencing last summer when Comey testified in the Senate and stated that he felt compelled to publicly disclose his conversations with Trump. In Comey's memoir, which will be published next week, he alleges that Trump has no concern for Russian interference in the U.S. elections and undermining democracy in his country, and that he only asked for loyalty. Trump has previously stated that he never asked Comey to pledge loyalty to him.
