Donald Trump Charged with Attempting to Change 2020 Election Results in Georgia

A court in Georgia investigating the alleged efforts of former U.S. President Donald Trump to change the outcome of the 2020 election in the state has filed criminal charges against him on Monday. According to Reuters, the charges brought by Fani Willis, the Fulton County District Attorney, will create new legal problems for the leading Republican candidate in the upcoming presidential election. This 98-page indictment includes a total of 19 defendants and 41 criminal charges. All defendants are accused of 'extortion,' which is used to target members of 'organized crime groups' and carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. Among the other defendants are Mark Meadows, Trump’s former White House Chief of Staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman. The indictment states: 'Trump and the other defendants refused to accept their defeat and knowingly joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the election results in favor of Trump.' One of the key pieces of evidence in this case is a phone call between Donald Trump and Brad Raffensperger, the Georgia Secretary of State, in which Trump explicitly asks this official to 'find' enough votes for him to overcome Joe Biden's tally and win the state. Four days later, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent lawmakers from certifying Biden's victory. The indictment references several offenses committed by Trump and his associates, including 'false testimony' to lawmakers about election fraud and encouraging state officials to change election results and violating their official oaths. Prosecutors also noted violations of the voting system in one of Georgia's rural counties and the harassment of an election worker who became the focus of 'conspiracy theories.' The indictment also mentions the plan to submit false lists of electoral voters to 'overthrow' the election process. It also states that Trump’s advisors, including Giuliani and Meadows, sought to influence the outcomes in other states by contacting officials in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and other areas. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and accused Democrat Fani Willis of having political motives against him. This is the fourth criminal case filed against Trump. He has pleaded not guilty in the three previous cases. Efforts to change U.S. federal court rules to allow televised coverage of Donald Trump's trial are underway.
