Donald Trump: The Era of Strategic Patience with North Korea is Over

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, emphasized the need for a decisive response to North Korean threats after meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday, July 9. According to Reuters, Mr. Trump stated that North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile program requires a 'decisive response' and that the era of 'strategic patience' with Pyongyang has ended. Speaking at a joint press conference with his South Korean counterpart, he continued, 'To be honest, the era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed; frankly, this patience and tolerance have come to an end.' Mr. Trump noted that while the goal of the U.S. is peace, the United States will defend itself. He added, 'America is working closely with South Korea, Japan, and other allies around the world to prepare for diplomatic, security, and economic actions to protect our allies and citizens against the threat known as North Korea.' According to Moon Jae-in, the South Korean President, 'North Korea's threats threaten both the U.S. and South Korea, and the two countries are united against it.' A few days prior, Chinese media reported that senior officials from China and the U.S. had agreed on what was described as 'irreversible and complete nuclear disarmament' on the Korean Peninsula. Reuters had reported on July 1, citing U.S. officials, that their assessments indicate North Korea has resumed testing a motor that could potentially be used for intercontinental missiles. Many experts and observers believe that North Korea has not yet succeeded in developing intercontinental missiles and is still unable to mount a nuclear warhead on such a missile, but it has made 'progress' in this direction. North Korea possesses nuclear weapons, and its leader has threatened the United States and South Korea with a preemptive nuclear strike. The United Nations Security Council has banned North Korea's nuclear tests and ballistic missile tests, and has also imposed sanctions against Pyongyang in this regard. Another topic discussed by the two presidents was the new trade agreement between Seoul and Washington. According to Donald Trump, the two countries previously discussed replacing an existing trade agreement that the U.S. President described as 'unfair.' Removing barriers to reciprocal trade and ensuring fair access to each other's markets, as well as providing fair conditions for automakers and steel producers, were among the topics of discussion between the two presidents.
