Donald Trump Warns Former FBI Director James Comey About Leaked Information

On Friday, May 12, U.S. President Donald Trump warned former FBI Director James Comey to "hope" that no "tapes" of their conversations have been recorded. According to the Associated Press, Trump tweeted: "James Comey better hope that there are no tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" Last Tuesday, the President fired Comey, stating that "he did not do his job properly." In his dismissal letter, Trump thanked Comey for telling him "three times" that he was not under investigation regarding possible ties between his 2016 election campaign and Russia. On Thursday, in an interview with NBC, Trump said Comey assured him once at a dinner and twice over the phone that he was not being investigated. Since his firing, Comey has not responded to Trump's remarks. Earlier on Friday, Trump tweeted again that reports about his campaign's ties to Russia are "fake news." He wrote: "Once again, the story of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign is fabricated by the Democrats as an excuse for losing the election." Trump added: "The fake news media is doing extra work today!" On Friday, the President defended his administration's position regarding Comey's dismissal. He tweeted: "As a very active President with many things happening, it is impossible for my people to have perfect accuracy!" Trump further suggested: "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future press briefings and hand out written responses for accuracy???" Advisors to the President have said that Trump fired the FBI director following the recommendation of Rod Rosenstein, the Deputy Attorney General, while Trump himself claimed he had made the decision beforehand.
