Donald Trump's Lawyer: The President is Not the Subject of Russia-Related Investigations

Donald Trump's personal lawyer stated that Mr. Trump is not the subject of investigations related to potential Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election and has not received any notification in this regard. Jay Sekulow, an attorney working with Mr. Trump on the Russia case, made these remarks on Sunday during the CBS program "Face the Nation." According to Reuters, these statements may contradict a tweet posted by the U.S. President on Friday. Mr. Trump tweeted that "I am under investigation for firing the FBI director by a person who told me to fire the FBI director. This is a witch hunt." However, Jay Sekulow told CBS that this tweet was in response to a Washington Post report claiming that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether the firing of James Comey, the former FBI director, was an attempt to obstruct justice. He stated, "The fact is that the President is neither under investigation nor has he been investigated." Mr. Trump's personal lawyer also emphasized that no notification indicating the President is the subject of investigations has been issued by the special counsel's office. An Associated Press report also indicates that Mr. Sekulow made similar statements on Sunday during the NBC program "Meet the Press." According to Reuters, Robert Mueller, the special counsel who previously headed the FBI and was appointed just days after Mr. Comey's firing by the Justice Department, is investigating whether any individuals associated with Donald Trump or his campaign had illegal connections with Russian officials or individuals linked to the Kremlin. Furthermore, Reuters quoted an official familiar with the initial investigation plan, stating that Mr. Mueller will also examine whether Mr. Trump or others committed any potential crimes to cover up their roles or obstruct the investigation. The U.S. President has publicly criticized the connection of the Russia investigations to himself and his associates multiple times, calling it "the greatest witch hunt in American political history." On Sunday, he also referenced this issue in a tweet, stating that his plan to "Make America Great Again" is progressing well despite the "disruption of the witch hunt." In this context, the U.S. President confirmed that he is under investigation, calling the accusation of "obstruction" of justice "fabricated." The Washington Post reported that the special counsel is investigating "Trump's efforts to obstruct the Russia investigation." Trump's new reaction to the disclosure of Comey's notes described it as "very cowardly behavior." Trump stated he is willing to testify under oath regarding his conversations with Comey. Trump's lawyer denied the accusations made by the former FBI director, who claimed that the Trump administration lied about him and the FBI, prompting a response from the White House. The former FBI director's testimony stated, "Trump expected loyalty."
