This ruling was initially set to be announced on September 19, about two months before the election, but Trump's lawyers had requested a delay. Judge Merchan cited the reason for postponing the ruling as avoiding any implications that 'the judicial process has been influenced, or is attempting to influence the presidential election in which the defendant is a candidate.' He emphasized that 'the court is a fair, impartial, and non-political entity.' About four months ago, the jury in this court found Donald Trump guilty on 34 counts in this criminal case; this was the first time a former president in the United States was convicted of a crime. This case pertains to the falsification of business records aimed at concealing a $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 presidential election. According to the Associated Press, the penalty for falsifying business records can be up to four years in prison, but the judge also has the discretion to impose probation, a fine, or conditional discharge. Following the news of the postponement of the ruling, Donald Trump once again referred to this case as a 'witch hunt' and a 'political attack,' stating in a post on his social media that 'this case must be properly dismissed as we prepare for the most important election in our country's history.' Last year, Donald Trump was charged in four separate cases, and as the new year, an election year, begins, he faces the possibility of several trials in criminal cases. However, a series of legal maneuvers over the past two months have led to delays or suspensions of these trials.
