Dozens of Political and Ideological Female Prisoners in Evin Go on Hunger Strike in Protest of Executions

Following the execution of Mohammad Qabadi and Farhad Salimi, two political prisoners, 61 political and ideological prisoners in the women's section of Evin Prison announced that they would hold a "public hunger strike" on Thursday, February 5, "in protest of the executions and to stop executions." According to Narges Mohammadi, a political activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, "61 female political and ideological prisoners" in Evin Prison will go on hunger strike to protest the executions and also to demand a halt to executions in Iran. In a statement published on Narges Mohammadi's Instagram page on January 23, it was emphasized: "On Tuesday, once again, the land of Iran witnessed the hanging of its youth. Mohammad Qabadi was executed under conditions where there was not even a final verdict for execution." The statement from the political and ideological prisoners in the women's section of Evin Prison reads: "The news of the execution of Iranian youth has sparked a wave of anger and protest in society. The political and ideological women prisoners of Evin will be on a public hunger strike on Thursday, February 5, in protest of the recent executions and for 'the cessation of executions.'" The statement calls for "be our voice against executions," stating: "The women prisoners will resist to keep the names of those executed alive and to ensure the survival of hundreds of people who are on death row in the prisons of the Islamic Republic across the country, and they will show their protest with their collective hunger strike on February 5." The execution of two political prisoners in the early hours of Tuesday, January 23, has triggered a wave of anger and protest on social media, with observers describing these executions as "revenge" by the Islamic Republic against the Iranian people following the "killing of its terrorists" in the region.
