Dutch Intelligence Agency: At Least 10 Jihadist Attacks Prevented in Europe Last Year

According to the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), at least 10 jihadist attacks were prevented in Europe in 2023. The agency announced on Tuesday, April 23, that Western intelligence services thwarted these attacks across various locations in Europe. The AIVD stated that the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas has increased the risk of jihadist attacks in Europe. In its annual report, the agency noted that the thwarted attacks included plans to randomly target civilians or preparations for attacks on buildings and specific events. The intelligence agency further mentioned that the burning of the Quran in the Netherlands and several other European countries, along with the Israel-Hamas conflict, were two significant factors contributing to the formation of these jihadist attacks. Following the Quran burnings and other provocative actions in Sweden last summer, anger among some Muslims was ignited, leading to an increase in jihadist threats. As a result, Sweden raised its terrorist alert level to the second most dangerous level. In the past October, two Swedish football fans were shot dead in Brussels by a man who claimed to be a member of the Islamic State jihadist group. Additionally, in the same month, a 20-year-old man killed a teacher with a knife and severely injured two others in an attack on a school in the city of Arras in northern France. The AIVD did not specify how many of the thwarted jihadist attacks were related to events after October 7. The Hamas terrorist attack on Israel was met with a response from the country, which launched an attack on the Gaza Strip, the area controlled by this Palestinian group. According to the agency, as the conflict continues and casualties rise, the likelihood of jihadist attacks in European countries has increased. The Dutch anti-terrorism agency raised its five-tier terrorist threat level to 'four' or 'significant' for the first time in five years, referencing the Gaza war. Three teenagers were arrested in Germany on suspicion of 'Islamist-motivated terrorist operations.' Police in Paris shot a veiled woman in the metro, stating her behavior and remarks were 'threatening.' Macron stated that Europe is witnessing an increase in 'Islamist terrorism.' Security measures in the Austrian capital have been heightened due to concerns about potential Islamist attacks. France is making efforts to combat Islamic extremism; critics say it is a political maneuver by Macron to attract voters.
