Dylan Roof Charged with Murder of Charleston Church Worshippers

Charleston police announced that a 21-year-old white man arrested on Thursday for the massacre of Black worshippers has officially been charged with murder. Reports indicate that this individual hoped to incite a racial war in America through his actions. Police officials stated that through a video link between the court and the detention facility, Dylan Roof, the accused perpetrator of the massacre, was formally charged. In addition to the murder charge, he is also accused of carrying a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Reuters reports that this young white man was arrested on Thursday, 350 kilometers away from the site of the historic Black church massacre, which has a 200-year history, in North Carolina. The shooting occurred on Wednesday during a Bible study group meeting, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including four clergy members, one of whom was a state senator from the Democratic Party. The U.S. Attorney's Office has opened a special case to investigate this incident related to hate crimes. The shooting at this Black church is the latest in a series of racially motivated violent incidents. Over the past year, the deaths of several unarmed Black men at the hands of police have sparked violent protests and intense discussions regarding racial relations, police behavior, and the judicial system's handling of these cases. According to CNN, Dylan Roof has confessed to the armed attack, stating that his goal was to initiate a racial war in America. NBC News also quoted a police official saying that the accused sat in the Bible study session for an hour before the shooting and nearly changed his mind about carrying out the attack due to the warm reception he received from the congregation. However, the spokesperson for the Charleston police declined to comment on the details of the suspect's confessions. Meanwhile, the Democratic mayor of Charleston, who has held the position for about 40 years, stated that this shooting would not create division among the city's residents. The governor of South Carolina also told the media that he believes the prosecution should seek the death penalty for this individual. South Carolina is one of the states that does not have special laws regarding hate crimes, religious crimes, and gender crimes. Barack Obama, the President of the United States, stated on Thursday that this attack is a reminder of a "dark era" in American history and highlights the dangers posed by today's lenient gun control laws. A Democratic representative from South Carolina also pointed to the issue of lax gun control laws, asking, "How many times must such incidents occur before we take the problem seriously?" The church where the shooting took place is known as "Mother Emanuel" and was one of the few places of worship for Black people during the 19th century in North Carolina, which was predominantly white. This church was burned down by white slave owners after the Black slave rebellion in 1820 and was rebuilt years later. In honor of the victims of this shooting, flags are at half-mast at all government buildings in South Carolina. Since Thursday, various groups of people, clergy, and civil activists have gathered in front of the church to express their condolences to the victims of this incident. Meanwhile, police continue to collect evidence inside the church building. One resident who participated in the gathering in front of the church told reporters, "The widespread gathering and expression of sympathy from the people show that Dylan Roof did not achieve his goal of creating unrest and racial violence with this crime."
