Efforts by the U.S., South Korea, and Japan for a Coordinated Response to North Korea

U.S. President Joe Biden is set to meet with leaders of South Korea and Japan on Friday, November 25, to discuss a coordinated response to the deployment of thousands of North Korean troops to Russia to assist in Moscow's war against Ukraine, as well as North Korea's nuclear threats. According to the English section of Voice of America, these negotiations will take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Lima, Peru's capital. Jake Sullivan, the White House National Security Advisor, told reporters on Wednesday, November 23, that the deployment of North Korean troops is a 'significant development' and added, 'We will take this matter seriously.' Mr. Sullivan stated that this trilateral meeting will allow the leaders of the U.S., South Korea, and Japan to prepare for any potential provocative actions from Pyongyang, including nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches, especially as the U.S. prepares for a government transition with Donald Trump potentially taking office in January. The U.S. government confirmed on October 24 the deployment of North Korean military personnel to Russia to assist in that country's war against Ukraine. Recently, reports have emerged about the presence of North Korean soldiers in occupied areas of Ukraine to aid Russia, with some even reported killed or injured. U.S., Japanese, and South Korean military forces conducted joint exercises on Thursday, November 24, in the waters south of the Korean Peninsula and west of Japan. North Korean leader has ordered mass production of suicide drones. Leaders of the U.S. and China are meeting and discussing in Peru.
