Efforts to Reconnect with Christianity; Scorsese Confirms Film about 'Jesus Christ'

Martin Scorsese, the renowned American filmmaker, has confirmed the production of his new film about 'Jesus Christ' aimed at 'removing the negative aspects associated with organized religion.' According to Scorsese, filming for this project will begin this year, and he is striving to reconnect with Christianity through this film, urging everyone to contemplate it. The 81-year-old Scorsese told the 'Los Angeles Times' that he has had this idea in mind for a long time and has finally completed the screenplay in collaboration with Kent Jones. The film is based on the book 'Life of Jesus' by the late Japanese author Shusaku Endo, who also inspired Scorsese's 2016 film 'Silence,' adapted from another of his works. 'Silence,' featuring Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, depicted Christian priests who traveled to Japan in the 17th century to promote Christianity. Scorsese stated that the new film has a contemporary feel, and they are 'immersed in inspiration' from the book 'Life of Jesus.' Unlike several of Scorsese's recent lengthy films, this one will only be 80 minutes long. He told the Los Angeles Times, 'I am trying to find a new way to access Jesus more broadly and to cleanse the negative burden of what is associated with organized religion.' According to Scorsese, 'Religion has failed in many ways right now. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the initial motivation was wrong.' He continued, 'Let’s go back and just think about it. You may reject it. But it might make a difference in your way of life, even in rejecting it. Don’t dismiss it without reason. That’s all I’m talking about. As someone who will turn 81 in a few days, I say this.' Scorsese, along with the cast of 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' informed Pope Francis, the leader of the world’s Catholics, about his intention to make this film during a brief meeting last summer. The filmmaker said at that time that he responds positively to the Pope's request for artists and will create a work about Jesus Christ using his only tool, which is imagining and writing the screenplay. Catholicism and religious themes play a significant role in Scorsese's works, specifically in 'The Last Temptation of Christ' and 'Silence.' His latest film, 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' has received much acclaim from art critics. However, considering the presence of a strong competitor like 'Oppenheimer,' it will be challenging to secure major cinematic awards. The release of Scorsese's film featuring DiCaprio has been postponed to 2023. Paul Sorvino, the actor from 'Goodfellas' and 'Nixon,' has passed away. Ray Liotta, an American actor and star of 'Goodfellas,' has also died. The Martin Scorsese Film Foundation showcases restored classic films from world cinema for free. Martin Scorsese will receive a special award from the Visual Effects Society.
