Eight Defendants in the Case of French Teacher's Murder Sentenced to Prison

A court in France on Friday, December 30, sentenced eight individuals in connection with the murder of a French teacher who had shown cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in his classroom to prison for one to 16 years. Samuel Paty, 47, was killed in October 2020, just days after he had shown the cartoons to his students, by an 18-year-old Chechen attacker named Abdullah Anzorov, who stabbed him and then beheaded him in the suburbs of Paris. French police shot the attacker moments after the murder. One of the convicted, the father of a student, had spread false narratives about the murdered teacher's use of the cartoons, which incited a wave of anger on social media. Ibrahim Shnina was sentenced to 13 years in prison for forming a terrorist organization. He falsely accused Samuel Paty of disciplining his daughter in protest of the class and published Paty's details and the school's address. Additionally, Abdulhakim Safroui, the founder of an extremist Islamic organization, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Both Shnina and Safroui were convicted of inciting hatred against Paty. Safroui's lawyer stated that he would appeal the court's ruling. Furthermore, two accomplices of the killer, named Naim Budavod and Azim Apsirkanov, were sentenced to 16 years in prison for their roles in this terrorist murder. Both denied any wrongdoing. Last year, Shnina's daughter and five other teenagers were found guilty of participating in a premeditated conspiracy. Shnina's daughter, who was not present when the cartoons were shown, was convicted of making false allegations and defamatory statements.
