Eight Israeli Soldiers Killed in Ground Operation in Southern Lebanon

Hezbollah of Lebanon reports that its militants have engaged with the Israeli army on Lebanese soil. This is the first time since the beginning of Israel's ground invasion of southern Lebanon that Hezbollah has reported clashes between its militants and Israeli soldiers. Concurrently, the Israeli army announced that infantry and armored units have joined its operations in southern Lebanon. These developments come a day after Iran's missile attack on Israel, raising concerns about the escalation of war in the Middle East. The Israeli army confirmed the deaths of seven soldiers and a commander of a small commando unit during clashes in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, October 3rd. According to published information, six of the eight were commandos from Unit 621, known as 'Egoz', who were killed during a firefight with Hezbollah in a village in southern Lebanon. The Israeli army stated that one officer and four other soldiers were also injured in this clash. Additionally, two soldiers from the Golani Brigade of the Israeli army were killed in another engagement, and a member of the rescue unit was severely injured. Hezbollah is both a militia group and a political party that controls a large part of southern Lebanon and is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States. The Lebanese army also reported that a Lebanese soldier was injured in an Israeli drone attack in southern Lebanon. Iran stated on Wednesday that the missile attack on Tuesday night was its largest direct strike on Israel, aimed at preventing further provocations. However, Israel and the U.S. emphasized that they would respond strongly to this attack. Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israeli army, said on Wednesday via social media platform X that 'most of Iran's missiles were intercepted by Israel and the U.S.-led defensive coalition.' However, clashes continue in southern Lebanon and along the border with Israel. Hezbollah stated that it has pushed back the Israeli army near one of the small towns in southern Lebanon and has engaged with Israeli forces in the border town of Maroun al-Ras. The group added that it has fired rockets towards military bases inside Israel. Mohammad Afif, the media director of Hezbollah, stated that these battles are 'only the first round' and that the group has sufficient forces and weapons to push back the Israeli army. Reports indicate that the deployment of infantry and armored units from the 36th Division, including the Golani Brigade, Armored Brigade 188, and the 6th Infantry Brigade, to southern Lebanon suggests that the scope of the Israeli army's operations will likely extend beyond a commando attack. The Israeli army has announced that the goal of this operation is to destroy Hezbollah's tunnel networks and other fortifications in the border areas of Lebanon and does not intend to expand its attacks to Beirut or other major cities in Lebanon. Nevertheless, the Israeli army has warned residents of more than ten other towns to evacuate these areas and move north towards the Litani River, which extends about 60 kilometers north of the border between the two countries from east to west. According to Lebanese government statistics, approximately 1,900 Lebanese have been killed and over 9,000 injured in the year since the beginning of the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. The majority of these casualties are the result of Israeli airstrikes in the past two weeks. More than one million people have also fled and become displaced from southern areas.
