Eight Months Imprisonment for a Kurdish Teacher

The news website "Kurdpa" reported the issuance of a new sentence for Soleiman Abdi, a member of the teachers' union in Saqez and Zivieh, by the Saqez Revolutionary Court. According to this report, Abdi has been sentenced to eight months of imprisonment for the charge of "propaganda against the regime." This labor activist had previously been sentenced to imprisonment and flogging in another case in the "Criminal Court 2" of this city. In the previous case, Soleiman Abdi was sentenced by Branch 105 of the Criminal Court 2 of Saqez to eight months in prison and seventy lashes for the charge of "disruption of public order and tranquility." The issued prison sentence was converted to 720 hours of teaching for individuals of the "Relief Committee," and the flogging punishment was suspended for two years. Abdi was arrested on March 18, 2023, by security forces at his home. This teacher and member of the Kurdistan teachers' union branch in Saqez and Zivieh has a history of previous arrests and judicial confrontations due to his activities. The security crackdown on nationwide teachers' protests in Iran continues; six teachers in Saqez have been summoned.
