Eight-Year Prison Sentence Issued for Journalist in Belarus

Roman Protasevich, a Belarusian journalist, was sentenced to eight years in prison on Wednesday, May 2nd, on charges of conspiracy against the government. Mr. Protasevich was arrested in May 2021 following the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. The flight carrying him was en route from Greece to Lithuania, but Belarusian air traffic controllers diverted it under the false pretense of a bomb threat and landed it in Minsk. According to the state news agency Belta, the 27-year-old journalist faces various charges, including organizing disruptive groups, encouraging terrorist acts, and insulting Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus. Mr. Protasevich, who worked for the Nexta news network, had reported on protests against Mr. Lukashenko in 2020. The founder of this news network and a former editor were sentenced in absentia to 20 years and 19 years in prison, respectively. Additionally, the Belarusian government has labeled the Nexta network a 'terrorist organization.' Meanwhile, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the exiled opposition leader of Belarus, called the trial of this journalist 'fake' and stated that Mr. Protasevich has been a hostage of the Belarusian regime since his abduction.
