Eli Lilly's Popular Weight Loss Drug Launches in Easier Form in the UK

The American company Eli Lilly announced that it will offer its weight loss and diabetes drug, Monjaro, to British patients within weeks after receiving approval for pre-filled injection pens. This makes the UK the first major market to provide this drug in a more accessible form. Julian Beach, an executive at the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, stated that the pre-filled pen allows for easy use and is intended for a one-month treatment with one subcutaneous injection per week. The injection pen includes four doses containing 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg of tirzepatide per dose. The starting dose is 2.5 mg once a week for four weeks, then increased to 5 mg once a week. This drug was approved by the UK regulatory body for weight loss in November, and at the same time, the US Food and Drug Administration also approved it under the brand name Zepbound for broader use. Monjaro will compete in the thriving weight loss drug market against the popular anti-obesity drug Wegovy, produced by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. The active ingredient in this drug, tirzepatide, helps lower blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes only when blood sugar is high. This drug also regulates the patient's appetite, making them feel full. Eli Lilly previously stated that its new injection pen differs from what is used for weight loss in the United States.
