Elon Musk Launches First Satellite Internet Service for Mobile Phones

On Wednesday, January 3, SpaceX announced that it successfully launched a set of new Starlink satellites into space. This new generation of satellites will provide direct internet services to mobile phones on Earth and is considered a milestone in the industry. According to Elon Musk, the American billionaire and owner of SpaceX, this internet service cannot compete with terrestrial services but will help connect dead zones and enhance internet service delivery to mobile phones. Six out of the 21 Starlink satellites launched on Tuesday, January 2, have the capability to connect directly to mobile phones. They are the first satellites from the company designed to provide internet service directly to mobile phones, functioning as 'cell towers in space.' SpaceX stated that these satellites will be used for the first time to test direct internet service in the U.S. through mobile phones from T-Mobile, which is collaborating on this project. Once the satellites are activated, regular mobile phones that are T-Mobile subscribers will connect directly to the internet without any changes or additional equipment. The internet services provided are 4G, which includes almost all mobile phones that have been active on the company's network for the past two years. Starlink also announced plans to launch a text messaging service using this technology by the end of this year, along with voice, data, and internet services by next year. Elon Musk celebrated the successful launch of these satellites, stating they will enable mobile phones to connect to the internet from anywhere on Earth. However, he reminded that this technology is still in its early stages and has limitations. Starlink emphasizes the importance of these satellites in global communications, stating they allow users to connect to the internet wherever they can see the sky. The company aims to utilize this satellite service for mobile phones worldwide. In addition to collaborating with T-Mobile in the U.S., Starlink is also partnering with other operators in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, Chile, and Peru. It is still unclear when this mobile internet service will be widely available and under what conditions. Given the challenges in providing internet service in various parts of the world, satellite internet services are considered highly significant and a suitable solution by experts. Starlink, operated by SpaceX, recently provided its satellite internet service in some regions of the world, including Ukraine for war victims. Some reports indicate that a number of users inside Iran are utilizing Starlink's satellite service by acquiring the necessary equipment. Elon Musk confirmed this news in a tweet (now X) in January 2023. He previously promised to support the people in the best possible way regarding the potential use of free satellite internet from Starlink if internet connections in Iran were cut off by the Islamic Republic.
