Emergency Landing of Israeli Plane in Jeddah; Netanyahu Thanks Saudi Officials for Warm Reception

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for allowing an emergency landing of an Israeli civilian aircraft at Jeddah Airport in a post on social media platform "X" in Hebrew and Arabic. According to Israeli media reports, 128 Israeli passengers were on this flight from the Seychelles to Tel Aviv, which was forced to land at Jeddah Port Airport on Monday due to a technical malfunction. All passengers were warmly welcomed and allowed to stay for one night in Jeddah. Netanyahu stated in his post, "I greatly appreciate the warm reception from Saudi officials for the Israeli passengers whose flight encountered problems and had to make an emergency landing in Jeddah." The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that the Israeli passengers were returned to their country by a charter flight. Saudi Arabian airspace had been closed to flights to and from Israel until July of last year. Although Saudi Arabia is not one of the Arab countries that have normalized relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords, there is much speculation about a potential agreement between the two countries. Riyadh has conditioned its recognition of Israel on addressing the Palestinian goal of establishing a state. Among the challenges facing this goal is the rift between the internationally supported Palestinian government and its armed Islamist rival, Hamas. Israel rejected the possibility of establishing a consulate for the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem. The United States denied an agreement with Saudi Arabia on a "framework" for normalizing relations with Israel. Israeli officials opposed "giving concessions" to the Palestinians for normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia. An Israeli legislator stated that establishing relations with Saudi Arabia is not seen in the short-term horizon. Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned, "We will connect Israel and Saudi Arabia by train."
