Emma Thompson Leads Rally in Support of Nazanin Zaghari

British Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson led a small protest on Saturday, urging the UK government to take more action for the release of Nazanin Zaghari. She accused UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson of worsening Zaghari's legal situation. According to the news website Rappler, during the gathering in Hampstead, North London, where Zaghari-Ratcliffe's family resides, Richard Ratcliffe, Zaghari's husband, also participated. Emma Thompson stated that the Foreign Secretary should go to Iran to resolve the issue. She added, 'We are a network of love and support for Nazanin and her family... If I can come here to support a member of our suffering community despite having pneumonia, then our Foreign Secretary can also fly to Iran and resolve the problem he has exacerbated.' Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian citizen, was arrested in April 2016 while visiting family in Iran with her young child. She was tried on charges of 'conspiracy against the regime' and sentenced to five years in prison. Last month, the Iranian judiciary raised new charges against her, and she is set to be retried on December 10 for 'propaganda against the regime.' Boris Johnson has been accused of worsening Nazanin Zaghari's legal situation. A few weeks ago, he stated in a UK parliamentary committee that Zaghari was teaching journalism in Iran before her arrest. However, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, where Zaghari worked, denied this claim, stating that she had never received journalism training and had traveled to Iran solely to visit family. Johnson later corrected his statement, acknowledging that it was clear Zaghari had gone to Iran for a holiday. He is expected to discuss Zaghari's situation with Iranian officials during his upcoming trip to Iran. Emma Thompson, an Oscar-winning actress and mother of two, supports the 'Open Letter from Mothers' campaign, which calls on the Iranian government to release Nazanin Zaghari so she can reunite with her young daughter. Gabriella, Zaghari's three-year-old daughter, has had her British passport confiscated and has been living with her grandparents in Tehran since her mother's arrest. In this context, Zaghari's new court hearing is scheduled for December 10, and the UK Foreign Secretary will meet with Nazanin Zaghari's husband. There are 'doubts' regarding the Foreign Secretary's diplomatic support for Zaghari. The Telegraph reported that the UK has expressed readiness to repay a £400 million debt to Iran. The Iranian ambassador rejected the connection between Tehran's claim from London and Nazanin Zaghari's case.
