Emmanuel Macron: The Russian Flag Should Have No Place at the Olympics in France

Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, firmly stated on Wednesday that due to Russia's involvement in "war crimes" and the "attack on Ukraine," the Russian flag should not be raised at the Paris Olympic Games. According to the Barron's website, Macron emphasized that "this is not a host country decision; it should be left to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)." At the same time, in response to the possibility of Russian athletes participating in the Olympics as "neutral," he stressed that this decision should be made by the IOC. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian and Belarusian athletes have faced sanctions in many sports. The IOC has also recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes compete "as neutrals or individually," provided they adhere to specific conditions such as competing under a neutral flag and "not supporting the war in Ukraine." The French President highlighted the need for a fair and balanced decision regarding Russian athletes, making a distinction between those who may be victims of the Russian government and those who are complicit with it. The International Paralympic Committee had also banned the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games. This committee decided on Thursday morning, March 3, after holding a special meeting just one day before the start of the 13th Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing, to prevent the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in these competitions.
