Emphasis on the Importance of Fully Implementing North Korean Sanctions at Canada Meeting

A Canadian government source stated on Monday, January 15, that an international meeting aimed at countering North Korea's nuclear ambitions will focus on how to ensure the full implementation of all sanctions against Pyongyang. According to Reuters, senior officials from 20 countries will gather in Vancouver, Canada, on Tuesday to discuss ways to intensify diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea to limit its nuclear and missile programs. This meeting is co-hosted by the United States and Canada. Last month, the United Nations Security Council imposed new sanctions on Pyongyang in response to North Korea's recent missile tests, severely restricting its access to imports of petroleum products and foreign labor income. North Korea has expanded its nuclear and missile activities, ignoring the Security Council's requests. U.S. officials have stated that the meeting in Vancouver will also address ways to enhance maritime security around North Korea and intercept ships attempting to violate sanctions. Eric Walsh, Canada’s ambassador to South Korea, noted that given the extensive and inconsistent sanctions against North Korea, there appear to be many blind spots for circumventing these sanctions. Walsh added that one of the things they are interested in doing is improving the enforcement of sanctions. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the U.S. President, criticized China earlier this month for allowing crude oil to reach North Korea. Washington believes that full cooperation from China, North Korea's neighbor and main trading partner, is essential to resolving this crisis. However, the U.S. has warned North Korea that all options, including military action, are on the table.
