Emphasis on the Need for Transformation in the U.S. Air Force Considering the Changing Nature of Modern Warfare

David Alvin, the commander of the United States Air Force, stated on Wednesday that the force is at a transformative point as it adapts to the changing nature of modern warfare. Speaking at the Brookings Institution, he emphasized that the principle of deterrence in the emerging era of great power competition and maintaining the capability to win against threats requires bold decisions and a commitment to adaptability. General Alvin highlighted that he supports a 'forward-looking approach' for the Air Force, referencing optimization plans tailored to the characteristics and nature of future modern warfare. These remarks from the Air Force commander follow a series of extensive changes announced earlier this month by the military to reorganize the Air Force to meet future requirements. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, these changes focus on forecasting and assessing rival powers and countering them, developing capabilities, and preparing to maintain superiority in the era of great power competition. The Pentagon recently announced that in a new planning and organization effort, it would reduce approximately 24,000 personnel to better prepare for future combat operations and large-scale wars. The Deputy Secretary of the Army emphasized on Tuesday the strategy of moving away from counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency approaches, aiming for greater readiness for future combat operations and large battles.
