End of a 20-Year Mission; Cassini Spacecraft Burns Up Over Saturn

NASA's Cassini spacecraft was deliberately destroyed over Saturn on Friday, September 15, marking the end of its 20-year mission. Messages indicating the destruction of the probe were received at 7:55 AM on Friday, while it had burned up in Saturn's atmosphere 83 minutes earlier. Cassini was the only spacecraft that transmitted numerous images and data from this planet to Earth over the past 20 years, and with its fuel exhausted, its mission came to an end, burning up like a meteor. The Cassini spacecraft first reached Saturn's orbit in 2004, accompanied by another probe named Huygens. Cassini remained in orbit around the planet while Huygens landed on Titan, the largest moon of the solar system, in early 2005. The Associated Press reported that a grand yet humorous opera has been created to bid farewell to the Cassini spacecraft. Robert Picardo, an actor from the old television series 'Star Trek,' said he wrote the lyrics for this opera in just one minute a few weeks ago. This piece, titled 'The Cassini Opera,' was created in collaboration with the artistic director of the Planetary Society. Picardo adapted the lyrics of this opera based on the music of Verdi's famous opera 'Rigoletto.' He stated that although the 20-year mission of the Cassini spacecraft was 'a serious success,' this opera is undoubtedly a comedy. Picardo told the Associated Press, 'There is no tragedy here. It's all good things. Everything, from NASA's mission and the Star Trek series to turkey and Swiss cheese sandwiches, eventually comes to an end.' Earl Maize, the Cassini mission manager at NASA, expressed his fondness for the show. He said on Wednesday at a NASA center in Pasadena, 'It is uplifting for us. Part of our mission is to foster more communication between people and Saturn. Our work is not just science for the ivory tower. These efforts are for humanity, so that everyone can join this flight. Come with us; this journey is extraordinary.' The Associated Press notes that this was also Picardo's goal. He, who has always had a great interest in both space and opera, played the role of the holographic doctor in the 'Star Trek' series, where he occasionally sang. Therefore, it is not surprising that he chose to honor the Cassini spacecraft by writing opera lyrics. In fact, he was able to see the Cassini spacecraft in 1997 before it left Earth. Picardo mentioned in an interview on Wednesday that he sang the Cassini opera lyrics twice in five minutes and completed the work. 'Undoubtedly, the production process of this piece was very quick.'
