End of Uncertainty in Congress; Mike Johnson Becomes New Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Mike Johnson, a representative from Louisiana, was sworn in on Wednesday with 220 votes as the 56th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Johnson's election ended three weeks of uncertainty in the House following the ousting of Kevin McCarthy by conservatives. He was the fourth Republican to be nominated for this position, succeeding Tom Emmer, who withdrew from the race on Tuesday after failing to secure the necessary 220 votes. Johnson is a Louisiana lawmaker who rallied Republicans during former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. On Tuesday night, he defeated other candidates within the Republican Party with 128 votes, while McCarthy, who did not announce his candidacy for this position, came in second with 43 votes. The Speaker of the House is legally second in line to succeed the President after the Vice President in specific circumstances where the President is unable to fulfill their duties. Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position due to his cooperation with Democrats in passing a temporary government budget to prevent a government shutdown, with the support of 216 House members, including a few conservative Republicans and Democrats. Following McCarthy's ousting, Patrick McHenry, a representative from North Carolina, temporarily took over the House leadership. Johnson, the Republican nominee for the Speakership, represents a renewed effort to elect a new Speaker. The latest Republican candidate also withdrew from the Speakership race, and Jim Jordan was sidelined after three defeats. The former Speaker of the House called for the 're-seizure' of $6 billion of the Islamic Republic's assets.
