Escalating Tensions Between Israel and Hezbollah Lebanon Coinciding with US Official's Visit to Beirut

Israel Katz, the Israeli Foreign Minister, warned on Tuesday, June 29, that the country is nearing a final decision for an all-out war with Hezbollah Lebanon. This comes as the United States has ramped up efforts to prevent the escalation of conflict in the region. Amos Hochstein, the US special envoy, who traveled to Beirut, called for an 'immediate' de-escalation of tensions at the Israel-Lebanon borders. Concurrently, as clashes intensify at the Lebanon-Israel borders, Hezbollah has reported its capability to attack Haifa, Israel's third-largest city. In a post on social media platform X, Israel Katz referred to Hezbollah's threat to attack Haifa's ports, stating that the country is 'very close to the moment of decision to change the rules of engagement with Hezbollah and Lebanon.' The Israeli Foreign Minister emphasized, 'In the event of an all-out war, we will destroy Hezbollah and deliver a severe blow to Lebanon.' The Israeli army later announced that operational plans for an attack on Lebanon have been approved and reviewed, with decisions made to continue and increase the readiness of forces in the operational field. The US representative called for a swift halt to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel Katz noted that the cost of such action would be heavy for Israel, but 'the country is united and must restore security for the residents of the north.' Hezbollah Lebanon stated that it will not cease its attacks on Israel until a ceasefire is established in the Gaza Strip. A Pentagon spokesperson also indicated that the United States does not want to witness a broader regional war in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Amos Hochstein stated on Tuesday, 'We have witnessed an escalation of tensions (between Israel and Hezbollah Lebanon) in recent weeks. President Biden wants to prevent further escalation and movement towards a larger war.' Hezbollah's attacks on northern Israel have intensified since last week when a senior commander of the group was killed in an Israeli airstrike. On Tuesday, Hezbollah released a 9-minute video showing one of its reconnaissance drones over the port of Haifa, which is 27 kilometers from the Lebanese border. Reports indicate that on Monday, June 28, an Israeli attack in border areas within Lebanon killed a Hezbollah militant. The Israeli army announced that it targeted a senior commander of Hezbollah's artillery unit in a targeted airstrike in southern Lebanon. Reports indicate that the killed Hezbollah commander, Mohammed Mustafa Ayoub, was a key figure in the artillery and missile unit of this Iranian-backed militant group in southern Lebanon. According to Israel, he had designed and executed multiple attacks against Israeli civilians and northern regions of the country. Prior to his trip to Beirut, Amos Hochstein also negotiated with the Israeli Prime Minister and President in Tel Aviv on Monday. Hezbollah Lebanon announced last week that since October 16, a day after Hamas's attack on Israeli territory that initiated the recent war, it has conducted over 2,100 military operations against Israel. According to statistics from the French news agency, at least 473 people, most of whom were Hezbollah militants and about 90 others civilians, have been killed in Lebanon since the onset of the conflict. The Israeli government has also reported that at least 15 of its soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed in Hezbollah's attacks.
