Escalation of Conflict Between Israel and Hezbollah; Netanyahu: We Are at the Peak of Battle

Israeli tanks and soldiers pushed towards the city of Gaza on Thursday. However, according to Reuters, they faced fierce resistance from Hamas militants. The Israeli newspaper 'Times of Israel' reported that Israeli forces have entered the city of Gaza. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, stated, 'We are at the peak of battle. We have achieved significant successes and have crossed the outskirts of Gaza City. We are advancing.' He did not provide further details. According to a Reuters report, Hamas fighters, a group supported by the Islamic Republic, countered the Israeli soldiers' attack using mortars and guerrilla tactics from tunnels. The Israeli army, which had previously entered the Gaza Strip, intends to extend its attack into 'Gaza City' within this territory. Following Hamas's sudden attack on Israel that killed about 1,400 people inside Israel, the country began its assault on Hamas with the aim of destroying this Palestinian militant group. Meanwhile, Hezbollah in Lebanon, another militia group supported by the Islamic Republic, announced that it had attacked Israeli army positions for the first time using explosive drones. Hezbollah also stated that it carried out 19 simultaneous attacks on Israeli army positions on Thursday using guided missiles, artillery, and other weapons, in addition to what it referred to as attacks using two explosive drones. The Hezbollah attack prompted a military response from Israel and heavy shelling, escalating the more than three-week-long clashes at the Lebanon-Israel border. The Israeli army announced that following the firing of several missiles towards Israel, it attacked a series of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Lebanese news agencies reported Israeli shells hitting various areas in the south along the border. Hezbollah stated that drones filled with 'a large amount of explosives' attacked Israeli soldier positions in the Shebaa Farms area and hit their targets. Both Syria and Lebanon claim that the Shebaa Farms belong to Lebanon. Israel has controlled the Shebaa Farms, an area of 39 square kilometers, since the Middle East war in 1967. The death of 50 Hezbollah members since the beginning of the conflict has occurred in a context where Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, is set to give a speech on Friday that has drawn the attention of war observers. This will be Nasrallah's first public speech since the Israel-Hamas war. Since the recent Hamas-Israel conflict, 50 Hezbollah forces have been killed. Many people in Lebanon are concerned about their country being drawn into conflict with Israel. Meanwhile, according to an Associated Press report, the Health Ministry of the Gaza Strip, controlled by Hamas, stated on Wednesday that more than 8,800 Palestinians have been killed in the war and over 22,000 have been injured. This figure is unprecedented in decades of violence between Israel and the Palestinians. Hamas did not disclose how many of these injured are armed members of the group. President Joe Biden called for a temporary ceasefire. Biden, at a fundraising event in Minneapolis for his 2024 re-election campaign, called for a halt in the war to free those held hostage by Hamas. Hamas took many hostages during the attack on October 7 and brought them to Gaza. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah, which the Islamic Republic spends a lot of money on each year, are listed as terrorist organizations by various countries. Previously, U.S. officials warned against any country or non-state actor seeking to expand the Gaza war. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia discussed the situation in Gaza and strengthening stability and security in the region. Secretary Blinken's trip to the Middle East coincided with the intensification of the conflict in Gaza.
