Escalation of Crisis Between Palestinians and Israel Following the Murder of Three Members of an Israeli Family

Following the murder of three members of an Israeli family with a knife and the killing of four Palestinians in clashes on Friday, July 30, the recent crisis between Palestinians and Israel has taken on new dimensions. Israeli media report that the country has deployed thousands of its security and military forces due to fears of escalating violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Clashes have spread from East Jerusalem to various settlements in the West Bank and the Gaza border with Israel. According to reports, Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's Defense Minister, and General Gadi Eisenkot, the commander of the Israeli army, visited the site where three members of an Israeli family were killed. Mr. Lieberman emphasized Israel's 'determination' to deal with the perpetrators of the attack on an 'innocent Israeli family' and called on Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, to clearly condemn this 'desperate' attack. The new crisis between Israel and the Palestinians began on Friday, July 14, with an armed attack by three Arab citizens of Israel near the entrance to Al-Aqsa Mosque against Israeli security forces. Following the killing of two members of its border police and the wounding of another, Israel expanded security measures around Al-Aqsa last week. However, Palestinian anger over the restrictions and intensified security measures imposed by Israel on worshippers at Al-Aqsa led to widespread clashes on Friday, July 30, which they called 'Day of Rage.' Israeli media reported that this family had left their door open in the Jewish settlement of 'Halamish' in the West Bank for guests attending a birthday celebration for one of the family members. Reports indicate that the grandchildren quickly moved to a room in the house and locked the door from the inside, but they could hear the screams of the adults who were killed in the knife attack. According to Israeli media, a neighboring Israeli soldier who was on leave but had his weapon with him arrived at the scene upon hearing the family's cries and shot at the knife-wielding assailant from a window, wounding him and then arresting him. The Israeli police stated that the Palestinian assailant claimed he carried out the attack to defend Al-Aqsa. The Israeli police also closed the assailant's Facebook page; in his last post, he wrote that 'life is worthless while Al-Aqsa is being desecrated by Zionists.' Israeli media report that following the presence of the Defense Minister and the army commander at the attacked family's home, hundreds of soldiers were deployed in the area and other Jewish settlements, as they do not consider the repetition of such attacks unlikely. Israeli security agencies have stated that the Palestinian assailant who killed three members of the Israeli family had no organizational affiliation, but Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other 'Resistance Front' groups praised the assailant's action as 'defending the sanctity of the holy shrine.'
