Escalation of Israeli Operations Against Hezbollah and Growing International Concerns Over the Expansion of War

As Israel intensifies its operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, the group supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, international concerns about the expansion of the war in the region have increased. Following the death of Ibrahim Qabisi, the commander of Hezbollah's missile unit, and at least six other members of this militia group during an Israeli attack on Beirut, Yoav Galant, the Israeli Defense Minister, announced on Tuesday, September 25, that Israel would continue its attacks on Hezbollah positions until the safe return of northern Israeli border residents to their homes. Concurrently, the Israeli army announced that its air force conducted hundreds of operational flights on Monday, September 24, for what it termed "eliminating threats against Israeli civilians and weakening Hezbollah's infrastructure and terrorist capabilities." Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, also emphasized the necessity of "removing the threat from the northern borders" and stated that Israel would do "whatever it takes to bring its citizens home and restore calm" in its cities. Following the surprise attack by the extremist group Hamas on Israel on October 7 of last year, Hezbollah engaged in crossfire with Israel in support of Hamas. This conflict has led to the evacuation of many border areas in northern Israel and southern Lebanon. While Israel's diplomatic efforts to push Hezbollah back from the border areas have so far failed, world leaders have stressed the importance of achieving a diplomatic solution between the conflicting parties. Joe Biden, the President of the United States, in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, stated that "total war" benefits no one and declared that a "diplomatic solution between Israel and Hezbollah is still possible." Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged all governments and influential actors in the Middle East to work to reduce tensions in Lebanon. On the other hand, Axios reported, citing several Israeli and Western sources, that Hezbollah has recently requested the Iranian government to attack Israel. According to this report, Iranian officials have currently opposed this request. Reports indicate that several international airlines have also suspended their round-trip flights to and from Israel and Lebanon. Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines canceled their flights to and from Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on Tuesday, September 25. Wizz Air, British Airways, and Azerbaijan Airlines also canceled their round-trip flights to Ben Gurion Airport in Israel. The death of the Hezbollah missile unit commander in the Israeli attack on the outskirts of Beirut has raised significant concerns.
