Thursday's meeting of European leaders is their first in-person summit since the October 7 attack by Palestinian militants on Israel, which has led to Israel's bombardment and complete siege of the Gaza Strip. Reuters quoted several diplomats reporting that countries such as France, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and Ireland have endorsed the UN's call for a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons. However, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria have stated that such an action could reduce Israel's ability to defend itself and give Hamas an opportunity to regroup.
