European Commission President Arrives in Kyiv for Talks on Support for Ukraine

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced on Friday, September 30, that she has arrived in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, for discussions on Europe's support for Ukraine. Ms. von der Leyen wrote on the social media platform 'X': 'My eighth trip to Kyiv comes as winter is approaching and Russia continues to target energy infrastructure.' She stated on Thursday, September 29, that 160 million euros (180 million dollars) from frozen Russian assets will be allocated for Ukraine's urgent humanitarian needs for the upcoming winter. According to the Associated Press, Ursula von der Leyen added that Russia must pay for the destruction it has caused. The European Union estimates that about half of Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been destroyed, making it increasingly difficult to heat homes, hospitals, and schools as temperatures drop ahead of the current winter of the ongoing war. Ms. von der Leyen said, 'Russia knows well that bombing energy stations hits Ukraine hard' and added, 'If millions are shivering in winter, the morale to continue the war could significantly diminish.' Meanwhile, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing two informed sources, that pro-Ukrainian leaders in the U.S. Congress and the Biden administration have reached agreements to extend U.S. military aid to Ukraine for another year. Reuters noted that this agreement comes at a critical time in the Russia-Ukraine war, as Russia is expected to intensify attacks on Ukraine's energy network ahead of the critical winter months.
