European Troika: The Islamic Republic Must Halt Nuclear Escalation

France, Germany, and the UK issued a joint statement on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, expressing deep concern over recent actions by the Islamic Republic regarding its nuclear program, urging Tehran to cease its path of nuclear escalation. The European Troika called for Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an end to the current nuclear program trajectory, a reduction in tensions, and a return to diplomacy, ahead of a Security Council review of Iran's nuclear program and a report from the UN Secretary-General on the compliance of Tehran's nuclear activities with Resolution 2231. The three countries referenced Iran's intensified uranium enrichment and threats related to its nuclear program, citing the IAEA's report which indicated that Iran has raised its uranium enrichment level to 60% without valid civilian justification and has amassed unprecedented stocks of highly enriched uranium, enabling it to quickly acquire sufficient fissile material for nuclear weapons. The European Troika also deemed the installation of advanced centrifuges in Iran a dangerous step, warning that these actions seriously undermine the nuclear agreement and escalate tensions. The statement highlighted Iranian officials' threats to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and remarks regarding their nuclear doctrine, emphasizing that such statements have heightened concerns about the future of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program. The European Troika called for Iran to fully comply with previous agreements, noting that Iran's lack of cooperation with the IAEA in recent years has weakened global efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The three countries stressed their pursuit of a diplomatic solution to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and urged Iranian officials to change their course and refrain from provocative actions.
