European Union Intensifies Sanctions Against North Korea

The European Union announced on Friday, March 4, that it has added the names of 16 individuals and 12 North Korean entities to its sanctions list. According to Reuters, the EU states that these sanctions are in line with the UN Security Council's resolution passed on Wednesday. Following North Korea's nuclear test last month, the UN Security Council intensified sanctions against the country on Wednesday, marking a new phase in the North Korean crisis. Meanwhile, Josh Earnest, the White House spokesperson, stated on Friday that it is too early to assess the impact of the recent sanctions against North Korea, but in the past, we have seen that intensified sanctions have led some countries to change their approaches. In response to a question regarding North Korea's reaction to the new round of sanctions, the White House spokesperson said, 'Our assessment is that these sanctions will not cause a change overnight; we have seen in the past that increased isolation has led some countries to reassess their strategies.' Earnest noted that Iran could serve as a good example regarding the impact of sanctions on changing countries' approaches. However, he emphasized that the provocative comments and actions from North Korea in the past 36 hours are not new. We continue to urge North Korea to refrain from provocative actions and to avoid making statements that escalate tensions. The White House spokesperson stated that North Korea would be better off fulfilling its international obligations instead of taking any other actions. This comes as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un issued a nuclear readiness order in response to international sanctions, stating that we must be prepared to use our nuclear weapons whenever necessary. In response to this threat from the North Korean leader, the Pentagon stated that Washington assesses that North Korea has not yet achieved the capability to deploy a nuclear warhead, and in the event of such a threat, American forces would be capable of neutralizing such attacks. International media report that the new sanctions from the Security Council are the most severe punitive measures taken against North Korea in the past two decades. Additionally, the South Korean parliament also passed its first resolution regarding the human rights situation in North Korea on Wednesday, with 212 representatives voting in favor. North Korea has been under UN sanctions since 2006 due to four nuclear tests and several missile tests. The new Security Council resolution is a response to North Korea's latest nuclear test in January and the missile launch that occurred on February 7.
