Europe's Request to Israel for Support of Proposed Ceasefire with Hezbollah

Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, urged Israel to support the proposed ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, stating that this agreement includes all necessary security guarantees for Israel. According to the Times of Israel, this senior EU official said at a meeting of G7 foreign ministers that there is no excuse for not implementing this agreement with Hezbollah, a group supported by the Islamic Republic that is recognized as 'terrorist' by several countries. Borrell stated: 'There is no excuse for not implementing the ceasefire... no more excuses. Do not make additional requests. Stop this war. End the killing of people.' Israel is expected to approve the ceasefire plan with Hezbollah on Tuesday, December 6. Israeli officials have emphasized that they accept a halt to hostilities, but this does not mean an end to the war with this 'terrorist group.' However, in another report, Benny Gantz, leader of Israel's National Unity, criticized the anticipated ceasefire proposal between Israel and Hezbollah as 'half the job' and stated that Israel must maintain immediate operational freedom against Hezbollah. Gantz wrote in a post on the social media platform X: 'The idea that we report to a committee first and only then act is fundamentally wrong, as Hezbollah can destroy our intelligence resources and relocate its weaponry.' He seems to refer to the 'international panel' that is responsible for monitoring the ceasefire. The National Unity leader added: 'We cannot talk about a temporary ceasefire. A withdrawal of forces now will create a movement that will make things difficult for us and facilitate Hezbollah's reformation.' Since October 8, 2023, Hezbollah-led forces have been attacking Israeli settlements and military posts along the border almost daily, claiming these actions are in support of Gaza during the ongoing war. About 60,000 residents of northern towns near the Lebanon border evacuated shortly after Hamas's attack on October 7, fearing a similar attack by Hezbollah and due to increased rocket fire from this Iran-backed militia.
