Europe's Troika Ready to Activate 'Snapback Mechanism' Against the Islamic Republic

On Wednesday, December 12, Britain, France, and Germany announced in a letter to the UN Security Council that they are prepared to initiate the immediate reinstatement of all international sanctions against the Iranian government by activating the 'snapback mechanism' if necessary. The ambassadors of these three European countries emphasized the need to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring nuclear weapons, stating that Iran must reduce its nuclear activities to create the necessary conditions for political progress and a dialogue-based solution. They also stressed that they would use all diplomatic tools, including the snapback mechanism, to prevent the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency recently warned that Iran has increased its uranium enrichment to 60%, a level very close to the 90% required for nuclear weapon production. Western countries insist that uranium enrichment at this level has no civilian objectives and that no other country has reached such a level without producing a nuclear bomb. However, the Islamic Republic has consistently denied these accusations, claiming that Iran's nuclear program has solely peaceful objectives. Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran's representative at the UN, urged European countries to abandon their 'pressure and confrontation' policy and help rebuild trust by focusing on diplomacy. Russia also stated in a letter to the Security Council that Britain, France, and Germany do not have the right to use the snapback mechanism and deemed this action irresponsible. Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, emphasized the critical need for a peaceful solution to the Islamic Republic's nuclear issue in his six-month report to the Security Council and warned that the worsening situation in the Middle East poses greater risks. If sanctions are reinstated, the Iranian government will be forced to suspend all activities related to enrichment and nuclear reprocessing. Additionally, the import ban on equipment related to these activities and conventional arms sanctions will be reimposed. Other countries will also be required to inspect incoming and outgoing shipments from Iran and seize any prohibited items.
